Secularism Big Story
Secularism is the most recent Big
Story. While Secularism is most often defined in terms of the shift away
from religious justification for political power
and morality, we Earthfolk have a radical and unorthodox
intellectual perspective
on what Secularism is and how it developed. We stress the
peculiar dynamic
and interrelationship that exists between the
Abrahamic, Scientism
and Secularism traditions.
Earthfolk's special claim:
all
three are, in their
own way, part of the
broader secularization movement that
is an
inherent characteristic
and
intrinsic dynamic
of
both the biblical Abrahamic
tradition and Western culture.
In brief,
Secularism is a movement
that describes how power changes in a tradition.
Scientism is a movement that describes how knowing changes
in a tradition. And, the
Abrahamic is a movement that describes how intimacy changes
in a tradition.
On August 6, 1945 these three Big Stories ceased to
function as explanatory and experiential referents
for understanding what was going on in the contemporary worlds of
power, knowing and intimacy. That
date
marked
their
historic demise—R.I.P.
8/6/45.
