One threat was the
transformation of American society into a permanently militarized
nation.
"Until the
latest of our world conflicts, the United States had
no armaments industry."
Ike spoke of the military-industrial
complex—a "permanent armaments
industry." He warned that,
"In the councils of government,
we must guard against the acquisition of
unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the
military industrial complex. The potential for the
disastrous rise of
misplaced power exists and will persist."
He sensed that America would
not benefit
from making "war" a marketplace
commodity—which is how matters then began to unfold.
