Alas, with
over-crowding and the breakdown of separate confinement,
within a few decades, the prison system shifted back to
what it had always been in most societies and cultures—and
as it remains today—a pit of dark

Intellectually, the present "American" prison
system lacks an
articulated and coherent social theory or policy,
and so aimlessly drifts along on the sea of lost
souls.
The penitentiary phase of "separate
confinement with mild punishments" was clearly a "missed
opportunity" for a truly unprecedented Revolution.
In like manner did the other two
chapters in the Dark Story of Origin unfold, namely, America's
treatment
of the
1) native first
people Indian population,
and of the
2) captured African slave population.
