There’s a lot more to learn from reflecting on your birthing and personality development cycles, but the point here is that you grew by interacting with the group in an “me/We” dynamic. The group forms you, and you form the group. You are a child, but you also grow into a parent as you parent.

How then do the group’s collective and communal ideas and values get transmitted to you? You get a bit of an insight into this when you have your first multi-cultural encounter. If you travel to a non-Western country, the jolt can be quite rude. While you recognize that all people are just people, you begin to learn about “cultural values” and “social assumptions.” People dress, eat, speak, interact in ways that sometimes baffle, annoy, perplex and even frighten you. Young Western women who visit a Middle-Eastern country are often angrily confronted by men who are in a rage over the fact that they are not wearing a head cover or are wearing lipstick or smoke, etc.

When you look at institutions that strive to change your behaviors, you get a sense of what we mean by deep sleep dreaming. Take military Boot Camp. For millennia, military trainers have turned sweet, milk-cheeked adolescents into ultra-violent killers. They do this by breaking down before building up. They break-down the bonds you have with your family and society and make you rebuild them through your identity as a warrior. In short, they inspire you with a broader and deeper vision and imagination. They tell you that if you act according to their vision and imagination—creatively imagine and so become a killer—that your family and social group will honor you and consider you a cultural hero.

The insight Earthfolk work from is based in the experience of war veterans. They return and often quickly re-adjust back into society…yet, the warrior dream never ends. They live two lives: waking life and dream life. In their dreaming life they remain heartfelt killers. They struggle during wakefulness to keep the dream from making that warrior present in everyday life.
