Scientism Big Story
Scientism accepts
the scientific
method as the proper rational tool
for knowing and interpreting events and reality. At its core, there
is a special relationship between the
empirical approach and findings of the scientific method and the
use of rational analysis and interpretation.
Since the scientific method properly
works with exploring and ascertaining empirical data,
there is no necessary
theory or Big Story that emerges from its findings. Hypotheses
and theories are developed using rational analysis and interpretation.
To be accounted
as "scientific," either as a fact, hypothesis
or theory, rational interpretation is strictly restrained by professional
standards. There
is a loosely defined peer based worldwide "scientific community" that
accepts or rejects claimed "scientific interpretations."
Scientism is a distinctly
different step in that it engages the
creative
imagining process. It is the peering at and sitting in silence with
empirical
data and
then
composing a
literary narrative, a Big Story, which presents a
comprehensive explanation
out of discrete parts: scientific data, hypotheses and theories.
Over time,
as new scientific findings and discoveries are made and accepted
by the scientific community, the Scientism Big Story is edited and
re-written.
This process is quite clearly evident in the development
of Scientism's chapter on Evolution.
For over a century this chapter on Evolution has
been written in stages. First, reported as a collection of
disparate facts, then developed via hypotheses into theories
to be claimed,
today
by many,
as a Big Story based upon an indisputable fact.
