Americans practice a Sacred
Secularism.
This is a national trait, not just
the idiosyncratic practices of individuals.
No other
national culture as clearly expresses itself
through Abrahamic imbued Secular imagery. Historically, "America" was a vision fashioned by male Christian leaders who, in the
main, articulated both a Sacred Scientism and Sacred Secularism
vision in what is commonly called the Enlightenment mentality.
This Christian Enlightenment vision
saw America as a land and people blessed by the Lone Male biblical
god. America had a Manifest
Destiny and was guided
by Divine
Providence.
America's government and governing institutions were
held able to manifest Christian virtues. America was
a Nation
with the soul of
a Church.
As the new nation grew, so did its
novel, creatively imagined Civil
Religion.
Sacred Secular imagery and language was part
of this national Civil Religion's everyday popular discourse—private
and public—until
its demise with the rise
of the Warrior's
Quest Big Story and the cultural transformation of the 1960s.
