To begin, a special space was needed.
It would have to be a secular space
that freed all from moral restraints.
More, it had to be an uninhibited place that creatively
freed the imagination
to imagine the unimaginable.
It had to be a social and communal place of altered
consciousness
so that what would appear apocalyptic to an outsider
was
considered mundane and every-day. Then, it had to be
a
heartfelt place where a new authority could
be exercised, honored and
obeyed.
Oak Ridge and Los Alamos, as the centers of creativity
and production, were transformed into secret zones—off
the standard map. The military planned, constructed
and effected the physical transition and transformation. The authoritative
call was from the Secular state—office of the president.
The challenge facing the individual
was to fully evolve into a militarized Secularist.
On a macro-level this was achieved through a process of
ritualization. It was both a conversion and
transformation experience. With whatever identity
the individuals entered the secret zones, when they exited they had
become newly-born Nuclear Warriors.
Once inside the Project, everyone was sworn to secrecy.
A special language emerged to unify all the disparate
thinkers and coordinate their talents. No expense was spared to ensure
locked-down secrecy and security. Those who wavered
or were loose of lip were quickly cast out.
