In this special militarized secret Secular space,
the emotion of dreadful fear grounded every action.
If they had ever questioned before, now they were true believers in
the demonic character of Nazism and its Axis partners.
Many on the Project who were trained in Axis countries
or escaped from the Nazis—as well as several lead
scientists who had worked for Hitler—had
no doubts that Hitler’s was simultaneously questing
for the ultimate weapon of mass destruction.
The Project was a race against time,
a Knight’s errand, and a Quest for the precious
Grail of Atomic Insight. In this light, as Hitler named
the Jews and other ethnic groups as sub-humans worthy
only of eradication, so did the Nazis and the Axis powers represent
the Intimate Enemy, worthy only of annihilation.
In this Secular flowering of the
Warrior’s Quest vision, a hyper-military masculinity ruled.
There was no tolerance for what would be considered
feminine traits. All soft hearted concerns were
subordinated and suppressed: compassion for the
victims, nonviolent alternatives, concerns for the Earth,
herself. In fact, one seriously weighed consideration was that exploding
the bomb would suck all the oxygen out
of the atmosphere—however this did not cause
the slightest pause in production.
Lastly, all were lifted up into an altered
state of apocalyptic consciousness. Highly
educated as the community was, the bargain between
Faust and Mephistopheles was seemingly left as a lesson that concerned
only lesser mortals—those not chosen to
enter the militarized Secular space and creatively imagine the
unimaginable and usher in the Nuclear Age.
